Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan has made his decision. Media is bit surprised over this decision as Raheel Sharif wasn’t the most senior one, and Nawaz Sharif has repeatedly said that he would make the senior most general as chief of army staff, but he didnt when the time came. There are 5 main reasons, why he selected Raheel Sharif as COAS of Pakistan.
1) His family background is apolitical and purely military based with two Nishan-e-Haider holders in his family.
2) He is from Lahore.
3) His father Major Sharif and PM’s father Mian Sharif had close acquaintance.
4) He has been playing an very active role against Taliban terrorists and will hit ground running as replacement of Kayani.
5) He has very close relationship with PML-N leader Major (r) Abdul Qadir Baloch. Baloch once said that he trusted on Raheel more than his children. Raheel was staff officer of Baloch as corp commander Quetta.
These are the reasons why he was given preference over the General Haroon Aslam.
