Giving policy statement in National Assembly on Monday‚ the Prime Minister said government will ensure rule of Constitution. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced that former dictator Pervez Musharraf will be tried under the article -six for abrogating the constitution. Giving the policy statement of the government in the National Assembly over trial of Pervez Musharra‚ the prime minister said that the government will ensure the rule of law and constitution in the country. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday said that the federal government will proceed against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for subversion of the constitution under the relevant laws including Article 6 of the constitution. Sharif said that the Attorney General later today will submit federation’s point of view in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He said before submitting government’s reply in the Supreme Court he thought it appropriate to take National Assembly into confidence.
He said the government is committed for upholding the supremacy of the constitution at all costs and will respect all judgments of the superior court. He said Musharraf abrogated the constitution twice without any lawful reason in October 1999 and again on the 3rd of November 2007. He said in 1999 country was on its way to progress and nothing was abnormal when the dictator dissolved the elected government. He assured the court and people of Pakistan that every judgment of the judiciary will be respected and implemented.
The Prime Minister said the government will also take into confidence all the political forces on the issue to reflect the will of the people in its decisions. Nawaz Sharif said being Prime Minister it is his obligation to protect the Constitution and the will of the people and every step will be taken in this regard. He lauded the previous national assembly for not giving indemnity to the unconstitutional steps taken by the former dictator who not only imposed emergency but also arrested the judges of superior courts and their families besides imposing unprecedented restrictions on media.
The Prime Minister also lauded the Senate for passing a unanimous resolution for registering case against the former dictator. Sharif said that the federal government fully subscribe to the judgment with respect to November 3, 2007 extra-constitutional measures. PM Sharif said he is under oath to protect the constitution, adding those who have subverted the constitution have pay for their deeds. He said Nov 3, 2007 measures tantamount to treason, adding that government’s action would be in line with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan. PM Sharif said that the government would also take other political parties into confidence on the issue.
