When Chaudhry Nisar recommended Musharraf to Nawaz Sharif as next army chief back in last century, the main argument of Nisar was that Musharraf was of ordinary personality with average looks and no star-studded uniform. Nisar was of the view that since Musharraf was not a looker, so he won’t attempt to snatch top slot from Nawaz as he would have to face the world and media then. Raheel Sharif has got the looks and he has got the medal-full uniform. He has got a strong family background with one Nishan-e-Haider in family which no other chief ever has had in Pakistan’s history. Raheel Sharif is foreign qualified as he has studied military leadership in Germany, Canada and Britain. Raheel Sharif has also been acting as de facto foreign and defense minister since the last year’s Imran’s dharna.
So Raheel also has lots of experience in the executive affairs along with the military affairs. He has seen the world and knows the leaders and now knows the ropes too. With the relative successes of Zarb-e-Azb and Karachi operations, his popularity is way high than the politicians especially because scared Pakistani media has pumped up his hype. GHQ’s media managers are very strong, aggressive, powerful and enjoy unlimited funding and resources. Likes of Pervaiz Rasheed cannot even blink in front of them. Tensions between Nawaz and Raheel are natural, but Nawaz has just left things on the mercy of destiny now. Question is not whether Raheel would oust Nawaz or not. The question whether he would make Imran next Prime Minister and keep acting as king maker and de facto head of everything? Again with his looks and so-called achievements; Raheel is very unlikely to give his prize to Imran because official is official.
