I am unable to sleep though its 4:30 am in the morning. Sleep simply won’t come but tears coming in droves. How could anyone target and kill the harmless Sabeen, who wasn’t threatening anyone and who was only doing the noble work without asking anything from anyone. She was a very good friend and a very close sister. She was like an inspiration yet very informal. Sabeen Mahmud was born in Karachi. A tomboy throughout her life, she was always the focus of everyone as she always took initiative in helping out others. She was a human rights activist and a tender soul who ran her own NGO with the name of Founder and Director of The Second Floor (T2F).
She was a multi-talented lady who ran the NGO, taught tabla and guitar lessons to many girls and boys of Karachi, managed a cafe, Sabeen was expert in graphic design, new media, and technology, and was also a co-founder of a boutique interactive media and technology (BIT) consulting firm. She was the Secretary of the Pakistan chapter of the South Asia Foundation and a member of Citizens for Democracy. The list doesn’t end there. Sabeen was an exception. She was the blogger, civil liberties activist, and a founding member of the All Pakistan Music Conference, the Citizens’ Archive of Pakistan, Aman Ittehad, and former President of the Karachi Chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE). During the late hours of 25 April 2015, she was shot fatally by unidentified gunmen on a motorbike while on her way home after hosting a seminar.
