It is the duty of MQM’s sector in charges and street supervisor to make sure that all the animals hides go to Khidamt-e-Khalq foundation on the Eid day after sacrifice. They have even devised a state-of-the-art computer software to keep track of all this hide collection. As soon as, a person buys and brings his sacrificial animal to home, MQM street in charge knows about it, and they make an entry with all the relevant data like address of that home, person’s name, animal type and its color. Just before Eid, a reminder is also verbally given to that owner of animal to make sure hide goes to MQM.
Majority of the people are so scared and fearful that right after sacrifice, first they submit the hide to MQM’s local office and then do anything else on Eid. With hide, of course they also submit couple of kg meat to the workers present in the office of MQM. For others, spies of MQM roam the streets, making notes who still has hide and who seems reluctant. In such cases, MQM thugs come by and give that person a hiding and take the hide away. And if somehow someone gives away that hide to any other party like JI or PTI, then for rest of year his life remains in danger.
Its a billion rupee business in Karachi, and MQM doesn’t tolerate sharing it. Already PPP and ANP have run away from this competition and the only adversary MQM faces is Jamat e Islami and PTI. One thing MQM doesn’t compromise on is their turf, and collecting hide is strictly their turf and right. In Lahore, things are not mafia-like but there is another problem. Its about public insensitivity towards disposing the hide and other waste after sacrifice. Though Turkish cleaning trucks and staff in Lahore do its best to clear up streets but the volume is so big and people throw the waste on side of road. This generates diseases and smell. Government should start a media campaign to address this as well as heavy fines for those who are caught throwing waste on streets.
