The narration has been edited to include research from a paper in Physical Review Letters (2004) which puts the size of the universe at 46.5 billion light years, not 78 billion as I originally stated. In the video narration, I round that value up to 47 billion light years. Like no likes.

Life in the Universe #1: Just on Earth, or Everywhere?

This is the first episode of a series on life in the universe. Looking for life in the universe isn't like looking for your car keys. It's hard to know where to even start. The best place to start is probably by NOT trying to find alien civilizations, but rather ANY kind of life we can.

The problem is, civilizations live and die in the blink of an eye compared to the lifecycles stars. They could come and go and we'd never know it.

Life in the Universe #2: Where Is Everybody?

Given that our galaxy is 10 billion years old and it should take civilizations much less time to develop and travel through the galaxy, why isn't the universe teeming with aliens? Where is everybody?

The Hole in the Andromeda Galaxy

On August 25, 2003, NASA launched the Spitzer Space Telescope. Designed to peer into the infrared region of the spectrum, this instrument was designed to pierce the veil of dust and gas blocking visible light and look deeper into galaxies, where young stars are born.

While imaging the Andromeda Galaxy, the Spitzer Space Telescope uncoverd a never-before-seen hole, the result of a collision with a nearby dwarf galaxy, in the Andromeda Galaxy.
