|Subject : Zong Stamps its Intentions on Introducing 5G Technology in Pakistan
In a significant development, Zong Pakistan, a China mobile company has shown keen interest to perform trial runs of 5G technology. This was expressed during the visit of Secretary General ITU, Houlin Zhao and senior delegation comprising Chairman PTA, Ismail Shah, Executive Director Frequency Allocation Board, Brigadier Sami and senior officials from the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication. It is important to mention that China Mobile recently at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, announced its intentions to launch 5G along with its announcement of the first 5G prototypes and affirming its plans for a commercial launch in 2020.
Recently, Minister of State for IT, Anusha Rehman stated that Pakistan will have 5G technology by 2020. In this regard, Zong has announced its intent to be allowed to use 5G spectrum on trial basis. It is pertinent to mention that in a similar instance, PTA had allowed telecom operators in Pakistan to use the 3G spectrum on a trial basis before the official award and licensing of the technology took place.

According to sources, during the visit of a high level delegation led by the Secretary General of ITU, Houlin Zhao, to the Zong HQ, he was given a thorough briefing on the Internet of Things (IOT) products and Enterprise solutions being developed by the company along with its interest to preform trial runs of 5G technology. According to news reports, China Mobile has completed the first phase of 5G programme in China, where it reportedly tested ‘new wave forms’ and ‘key technologies such as 3D-MIMO’. In the next phase international publications have reported that they would be conducting trials for terminal and base station architecture and hardware. 3.5GHz trials in China will aim for 3 Gbit/s on the downlink and 1.5 Gbit/s on the uplink in China.
China Mobile and Huawei have also showcased 5G 3.5GHz prototype, 5G above 6GHz high band prototype, 5G network slicing solutions, 5G smart car use case solution along with other 5G innovations in Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. Recently, during the visit of the ITU Secretary General, Houlin Zhao to Zong HQ along with PTA Chairman, ED Frequency Allocation Board and senior officials of the Ministry of IT, CEO Zong, Liu Dianfeng, said:
“Our teams are working very hard not only to bring new technology to the Pakistani people but also the applications and end-to-end solutions and enhance the quality of life for the local people. These solutions have been exclusively developed by Zong and have been tried and tested in China which will now be available in Pakistan.”
