History & Overview of the National Dance Festival-
In 1996 RPTW joined hands with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Pakistan, to create the 1st National Dance Festival. The core goal of the Festival was to promote and establish an effective platform for the art of Dance in Pakistan. An art that is an intrinsic component of our cultural heritage and despite, how its and its practitioners have been marginalized over the years.

Our vision was to bring together the few professional dancers and choreographers in the country, not merely as entertainment, but also as a pure art form. Celebrating the diversity of styles and philosophies of each artist and individual performer.

Since 1996, the RPTW merged the National Dance Festival with the International Theatre & Dance Festival – until these too were amalgamated into the World Performing Art Festival in the year 2000.

Over the years the RPTW has through these platforms showcased the Classic, Modern, Contemporary and Devotional schools of dance on a global platform, giving these struggling artists one last foothold in their mother country.

The Festival gave a home and a platform to the diverse and exciting dancers and dance forms indigenous to Pakistan and brought them from marginalized isolation to the forefront of the public eye.

The Festival caused our people to think about the very real possibility of extinction that dance in Pakistan faced and also highlighted the power of our local dance culture to represent a new, softer and utterly beautiful face of Pakistan. These Festivals also gave rise to many wonderful artistic collaborations through exposure to and sharing of ideas and methodologies. This we believe is lies at the very core of the evolution of any true art form.

Over the years the festivals have featured such memorable performances and dynamic collaborations as Qawali/Tango Fusion – other memorable performances and collaborations

The Festival-
To further the goals of the vision created in 1996, the RPTW now embarks on the journey of staging the 2nd National Dance Festival – Pakistan. The festival will be a unique showcase of Classic, Contemporary and Devotional dance and will once more bring to the forefront this vibrant and exciting part of our cultural heritage.
